Situated in the Northern sector of the city and to the west of the river, St. Andrews and Pukete, including the area known as Te Rapa, were only developed from the late 1960’s onwards. St. Andrews was developed around the St. Andrews golf course which was established in the early part of the twentieth century. Distance from the CBD is between 4 – 6 kilometers. In an effort to reduce traffic, the Hamilton City Council has upgraded the bus service to all areas.
The homes built in the area around the golf course are predominantly brick and tile homes with substantial basements. There is a more exclusive area closer to the river where luxurious and spacious riverside homes were developed throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Other parts of these suburbs have more modest and affordable three bedroom homes, some of which still stand on sections of 800m2 or more.
Hamilton North Primary, Pukete School, Te Rapa School and St. Peter Chanel Catholic School all provide Primary education. St. Andrews Middle school provides intermediate schooling and runs through to Form 4. Fraser High school is the secondary school zoned for this area. Check zoning with the relevant schools or with your Lugton’s consultant.
There are a number of convenience shopping centers in the area and an abundance of specialty shopping at the nearby complex The Base. There is a branch of the City Council Libraries in St. Andrews.
Hamilton Golf Club based at St Andrews golf course is reputedly one of the best courses in the country. There is a gym for women in Sandwich Road. The Te Rapa sports centre offers squash courts and rugby fields. There are many access points to the river walking track that provides an excellent jogging or walking opportunity. There are numerous parks throughout the area.
