These two areas of Hamilton, located in the south east of the city, are both of historic importance to Hamilton, being settled in the 1870’s. Claudelands has been designated by the City Council as a Special Character area in order to preserve its heritage. The CBD is within walking distance from the area, accessible via the Claudelands Bridge. Hamilton East is further to the South of the city yet is within 1 -3 kilometers to the CBD. Extensive bus services make access convenient and easy.
Claudelands boasts some of the city’s most beautifully restored and renovated Character Villas, many of which were constructed in the early 1900’s. Prior to the designation of the area as Special Character, a great deal of infill housing and large blocks of flats were constructed. This provides many options for those wanting to live in the area. This is a leafy suburb with large trees and lovely gardens. Hamilton East has a unique character, not unlike a village in itself. Many of the original villas and bungalows have also been sympathetically restored in order to preserve the character whilst modernizing to today’s standards. The streets are wide and tree-lined. Some areas have seen the development of high density housing in the form of apartment blocks, which have created diversity in the area.
Primary schools Hamilton East Primary and Marian Catholic School are located in the Hamilton East area and Southwell School (an Independent Christian school) is easily accessible from both areas. For the next level up, Peachgrove Intermediate caters to Years 7 and 8. High Schools in the area are Hamilton Boys High School – opposite Peachgrove Intermediate and Sacred Heart Girls College, opposite Marian School. Check for zoning restrictions with the schools or with your Lugton’s consultant.
Grey Street in Hamilton East has a wide range of shops from fashion stores to health stores, shoes, pharmacy, a bulk retailer and many food outlets and cafes. Claudelands residents shop at Five Crossroads which has a wide variety of stores including bulk retailers and an excellent Cake Kitchen. Convenience shopping is also found in Heaphy Terrace which offers excellent value fresh produce, and at the Te Aroha roundabout are some specialty shops and an Asian Supermarket. Access to the downtown area is very easy, across the footbridge.
Open spaces are to be found in the many parks in the areas including Galloway Park, which serves as a cricket ground; Steele Park where cricket and touch rugby are played; Claudelands Park (which is also a major event centre) and the famous Hamilton Gardens which provides great scope for recreation as one explores the many and varied Theme Gardens which offer excellence in design, plant collection and botanical wonders. Tracks along the river make for highly enjoyable cycling and walking. The closest gym is at the University Recreation Centre.
Hamilton East boasts some of the city’s finest Heritage sites. Greenslade House is situated on prime riverside real estate and stands proudly visible – like a fairytale castle - from key vantage points and from the river itself. It was built in 1912 from local and imported materials, and no expense was spared in its creation. It has been beautifully preserved. Buffalo Hall was built in 1874 and was a popular place for dances because of its kauri floor. It is now known as The Cook and is still a lively venue for people to meet, eat and listen to good music. Institute de Notre Dames des Missions was built as a convent in 1939. It was the first three-storied building in Hamilton and was built in the Romanesque style. It is currently used as a hostel for boarders of the Sacred Heart College.
